Diamond Trail Scarf Pattern
Here’s a pattern for an easy, one-skein scarf. I used Caron Simply Soft, but any yarn that gives good stitch definition will work. The patterns hasn’t been tested, so if you find a mistake, drop me a note so I can make corrections. Enjoy.
Supplies: 165 yds. Sport weight yarn, Size J hook
Ch 182.
Row 1] Working in front loops across, sc in 2nd ch and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2] In front lps, dc in ea sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3] In front lps, sc in ea dc across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4] Dc in next sc, [ch 2, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, ch 2, sk 1 sc, dc in next 2 sc] across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5] Sc in next sc, [ch 4, sc in next 2 dc] across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 6] Dc in next sc, [ch 1, sc in ch-4 lp, ch 1, dc in next 2 sc] across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7] Sc in ea sc and ch-1 sp across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 8] In front lps, dc in ea sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9] In front lps, sc in ea dc across. Tie off, weave in ends.
The projects I most admire in knitting are the delicate scarves and wraps worked in lace and fingering weight yarns. Sadly, there aren’t many comparable patterns in crochet. I’m not sure why that is but, hopefully, more crocheters will be inspired to experiment with designs in these lighter-weight yarns.
Materials used: size H hook, approximately 440 yds. Knit Picks’ Shadow.
Finished size: approximately 4 1/2″ x 57″.
[ETA: I used the lace weight yarn doubled for this project. You could substitute with 220 yds. of fingering weight yarn instead.]
Ch. 25.
Row 1) 2 dc in 4th ch from the hook, ch 1, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch, (ch 2, sk 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch, ch 1, sk 2 chs, sc in next ch) 3 times, ending with sc in last ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2) 2 dc in same st as turning ch, ch 1, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, (ch 2, 3 dc in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc) 3 times, ending with sc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3) 2 dc in same stitch as turning ch, ch 1, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, (ch 2, 3 dc in next sc, ch 1, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc) 3 times, ending with sc in top of turning ch.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 to desired length.

Row 2) Sc in next sc, ch 3, sc in ch-5 lp. [Ch 3, sk 1 sc, sc in next 3
sc, ch 3, sc in ch-5 lp] twice. Ch 3, sc in last sc, sc in turning ch.
Ch 1, turn.
Row 3) Sc in next sc, ch 3, sc in 1st ch-3 lp, sc in sc. [Sc in next ch-
3 lp, ch 3, sc in 2nd sc, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 lp, sc in next sc] twice.
Sc in last sc, sc in turning ch. Ch 5, turn.
Row 4) Sc in 1st ch-3 lp. [Sc in next 3 sc, sc in next ch-3 lp, ch 5,
sc in ch-3 lp] twice. Sc in next 3 sc, sc in last ch-3 lp. Ch 3, dc in
turning ch. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5) Sc in ch-3 lp. [Ch 3, sk 1st sc, sc in next 3 sc, ch 3, sc in ch-
5 lp] twice. Ch 3, sk 1st sc, sc in next 3 sc, ch 3, sc in last lp & top
of turning ch. Ch 1, turn.
Row 6) Sc in sc and ch-3 lp. [Ch 3, sc in 2nd sc, ch 3, sc in ch-3 lp,
sc in sc, sc in next ch-3 lp] twice. Ch 3, sc in 2nd sc, ch 3, sc in ch-3
lp, sc in next sc, sc in turning ch. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7) Sc in next 2 sc & ch-3 lp. [Ch 5, sc in next ch-3 lp, sc in
next 3 sc, sc in ch-3 lp] twice. Ch 5, sc in ch-3 lp, sc in last 2 sc, sc
in turning ch. Ch 1 turn.
Row 8) Sc in next 2 sc. [Ch 3, sc in ch-5 lp, ch 3, sk 1st sc, sc in
next 3 sc] twice. Ch 3, sc in ch-5 lp, ch 3, sc in last 2 sc, sc in
turning ch. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat rows 3-8 to finish.

The end of row 3 on the spider lace scarf seems to be missing a chain 3, that is I had to add one for it to work up evenly.
I’m wondering if there should also be a ch 3 at end of row 3 on the ziggy scarf?
I believe there should be also. I added it to my pattern and it looks right. I am wondering why row 2 has a ch 2 on both sides of the 3dc and only a ch 1 after on row 3. Do you know?
My first attempt at the diamond trails scarf was a disaster. But it was the first thing I tried to make upon learning how to sc and dc. I’m making another run at it with Caron Simply Soft in Autumn Red. So far, so good. Thank you so much for posting these patterns!
Well, seven hours later, I’ve almost finished the diamond trails scarf (and done a bunch of other things around the house). I just have the final row of sc to do. It works up really easily, and looks great in red! I love it! Thanks again for the pattern!

At the beginning of row 5 of the Diamond Trail Scarf, did you mean sc in next dc, or are we to skip over to the first sc?

I want to thank you so much for the crocheted Ziggy Scarf. I love it and have made about 8 for gifts and charity.
However, I think there should be an errata. At the end of row 3, you left out the turning chain. Actually, you only need to repeat row 2 to the end, so it is really just a 2-row pattern — so simple and beautiful.
I have re-written the pattern for my church knitting group — still with your name on it, but adapted by me. Basically, I am a knitter, but do crochet once in a while, and this scarf is a favorite.
